Meend is the Indian term for pitch modulations. It is used intensively in Indian music. You can achieve that similar effect in SwarShala using a Meend curve. Click on the MEEND icon on to toggle its display. It appears as an orange line/curve over the cells, as shown here:
By default, no pitch modulation is defined (so the orange line appears fully horizontal, in the middle). You can define meend curves across one more cells by right-clicking on one and selecting Set Meend option. You will then see the following Set Meend panel:
Here you can tailor your meend curve by adding, removing or moving points. A click on an empty area of the graph will add a point. A click on a point, or dragging a rectangle around one or more points will select them. You can then drag them to another position or press the delete key to delete them.
INITIAL PITCH lets you start the modulation with an already modulated pitch. This can be useful when creating some complex meends.
PITCH RANGE defines the maximum number of notes of your graph. This is the number of notes the pitch will be offset if you put a point at the top or bottom of the graph.
MEEND APPLIES TO can be used for instruments having multiple strings/parts. This allows you to only apply the pitch curve to a specific string/part. By default, it applies to the whole instrument.
PLAY NEXT NOTE specifies whether you should start a new stroke on the next cell (with its own attack) or whether the current stroke should continue and tuned to the note in the next cell.
TEMPLATES
There is also an interesting functionality in the form of Templates. If you are happy with one meend curve, you can save it as a specific template, by giving it a name and pressing Save button. Similarly, if you'd like to use a pre-saved template for your meend curve, just select it in the TEMPLATE drop-down list.
To save your changes, click on APPLY.
To remove any pitch modulation, click on CLEAR.
To listen to your modulation, click on AUDITION.
To move to next/previous cell, click on the corresponding arrow button.
