In Indian classical music, it's also rare that notes are played simply one after the other. In most cases, some kind of ornamentation is used to embellish the result. In SwarShala, 2 of them are particularly useful: Meend and Articulation.
Meend translates as “glissando”. In that, you don't play the next note, but instead pitch shift the current one to the required pitch. This is a very characteristic style in Indian music.
In SwarShala, adding Meend is as simple as selecting 2 or more cells, right-clicking on them and selecting Add Meend option. When that is done, you will see a small curvy link between the cells appear, signaling they will be played as a Meend.
By default, the glissando is quite fast, but you can resize it at wish by clicking on it (it becomes maroon), and then resizing one of its borders. This way you can achieve very slow glissandos as well.
If you want to remove a Meend, just click on it and press the Delete key.
Articulation is another important ornamentation, where instead of keeping a note “plain”, you add a quick movement to a different note in it. This is also made very easy in SwarShala.
To add an articulation, right-click the cell in which you want to add it and select Add Articulation. You will then see the Articulation dialog as here:
First you need to select the note/stroke you want to move to. You can give it specific emphasis, octave and/or pitch adjustments.
Then you need to specify at which starting position (in %age of the cell duration) it should start and at which position it should resume.
Finally, you can choose whether you want it to be as glissando (“Meend”) or not.
Once you confirm, the articulation will be created as per your specifications.
