Now that we have created our sequence with a certain number of beats, the next step is to insert notes (or strokes for rhythmic patterns) into it. That can be done in 2 ways:
Here we double-click on the first cell we want to update; it then turns into Edit mode, meaning it shows you the item it contains and allows you to replace it if needed. All you have to do it to type the name of one or more items, be it individual strokes/notes or sequences like “tirekite”, then press Enter and the cell will be set to that.
Only requirement is that what you type should be the full path of the item in the tree view. So if a stroke or note is within a subfolder like “Other Strokes\Chikari\s” you need to type all that for the cell to recognize it. However, most notes and strokes are stored at the root of the tree view, so only their name, like “na” or “d-” is sufficient.
Also note that if you type more than one item in the cell, it is divided in as many parts, each containing one of the elements.
Finally, instead of typing Enter to confirm, you can type Tab to confirm and move to the next cell, remaining in Edit mode. Shift + Tab can be used to move to the previous cell.
You can also drag the items from the tree view directly into the cells. For that, you only need to keep Shift pressed when you start dragging the stroke/note so that the view stays on your sequence. This mode is very easy when you have items with complex names or within subfolders.
Just some info on the naming of note items in melodic bases. We have used some simple notation that use the first letter of the note in lower case. When the note is Komal (bemol) we have added a “-” to it. When it's Tivra (sharp) we have added a “+”.
We have also appended dots to notes of the higher octaves. One dot per higher octave. For lower octaves, we add the dots before the note symbol.
This provides an absolute notation that is easy to use when you type them. Of course, notes will display differently within the cells.
If you have set the Notes Naming field in Tools > Options > Other Settings to CARNATIC, notes will display in the Carnatic S, R1, R2, R3, etc… notation for ragas on which a Melakartha is selected. In all other cases, notes will display in the Hindusthani way, like Sa, Re, Re, Ga, etc…
