The SwarShala Indian music software includes Banjo and over 100 other perfectly sampled virtual Indian instruments.
The Indian Banjo is a very particular instrument that combines a rudimentary keyboard on a plucked strings body. Technically, it has various strings attached to a wooden case, that are plucked using a plectrum, while at the same time pinching them by pressing the keys with the left hand to echo different notes.
It is usually electrified and thus has a similar sound to a distorted electric guitar. It is a very popular instrument in India, specially for outdoor celebrations where it is joined by lots of different drums to create a very festive atmosphere. It is also used intensively in rhythmic music like Qawwalis or fast bhajans.
